CABIN IN THE WOODS – ROTTEN TOMATOES 92% CERTIFIED FRESH

cabininthewoods

A stereotypical horror film that follows the story of a bunch of teenagers going to their new cabin in the woods for a much needed, party vacation. Twists and turns along the way provide thrills in a comedic manner as the creatures of the night come to life to haunt these youngsters.

THE BABADOOK – ROTTEN TOMATOES 98% CERTIFIED FRESH

The Babadook

Not all monsters haunt is from under the bed or in the closet. Some monsters stem from the darkest parts of our souls. The Babadook redefines what a classic haunting film looks like while addressing a bigger issue with how we cope with loss and tragedy.

V/H/S – ROTTEN TOMATOES 55%

VHS-Movie

We typically have a rule of thumb when it comes to Rotten Tomatoes where any movie about 60% is worth seeing in theaters, while a 40-60% is worth waiting til it comes out on a streaming service. However, don’t be fooled by the lower rating on this film.

The movie starts out with a group of guys breaking in to rob a house, only to find that someone may have already been there as there is a dead body on the couch next to a stack of VHS tapes. Curiosity gets the best of one of the characters as he decides to watch a few of the VHS tapes while the others ransack the house. From there, each tape is a ‘horror short’ with 5 to 15 minute individual stories of murder and madness.

This video is typically available for streaming on all major platforms.

EVIL DEAD – ROTTEN TOMATOES 96%

Evil Dead

We can’t confirm that the top movie on this list, Cabin in the Woods, wasn’t heavily influenced by this cult classic film. However, there are plenty of fan theories out there  that attempt to link the two in one way or another. Some even argue it’s the same cabin being used. But I digress..

The movie starts off similar to how Cabin in the Woods begins. A group of teenagers headed to a literal cabin in the woods for a weekend getaway. Things take a dark twist when one of them unearth the evil locked within the cellar which leads the group to try and survive the night. Keyword, try.

The original 1981 version is only available for digital purchase.
The remake can be rented or purchased digitally.

SAW – ROTTEN TOMATOES 48%

Saw 1

How this movie managed to walk away with a shameful 48% has had us scratching our heads. The plot is simplistic in nature, and was the great start of the ‘torture porn’ franchises (i.e. Hostel, Human Centipede, etc.), but in it’s ending it only grew in strength.

The first Saw film follows the story of what appears to be two strangers, trapped in a room. The film rarely leaves the actual room, allowing for the movie-goer to feel the tension and stress to a degree that the two trapped are feeling. They are faced with challenges in order to be allowed to live. Games, if you will. These are all put in place by the notorious ‘Jigsaw’ killer, a serial killer who has carefully selected his victims based on ungratefulness for life. Through this twisted selection, he gives the victims a chance to live, but at a catch. Is the damage Jigsaw doing worth living through? These two strangers reveal the answer.

IT FOLLOWS – ROTTEN TOMATOES 96% CERTIFIED FRESH

It Follows

Some things will haunt us forever. Whether that is a metaphor or a malevolent spirit is up for you to decide. It Follows takes the naivety from a young girl in love with a quick night of romance gone wrong. This encounter sacrifices her to a spirit that had been following him for some time, and can only be passed along through sexual intercourse. Sleepless nights follow her as she runs and tries to get away from whatever ‘it’ is, through 80’s inspired synth-wave music orchestrating every chilling moment.

THE OTHERS – ROTTEN TOMATOES 83% CERTIFIED FRESH

the others

A horror movie lost in time, much like the career of Nicole Kidman after her freeing break up with Tom Cruise. A tale of ghosts, murder and insanity line the walls of her Victorian Mansion as she awaits the return of her war-departed husband.

MOTEL HELL – ROTTEN TOMATOES 67%

motel-hell-body

The 80’s were filled with fantastic B-horror flicks, and Motel Hell is one of those that have slipped through the cracks and have since been forgotten. Nothing is more terrifying than a couple of country-side, cannibal red necks who just so happen to make the world’s best sausage and beef jerky. Chalked full of 80’s humor, and that paused acting we’ve grown to love.. Motel Hell is a must for any Halloween list.

PERNICIOUS – ROTTEN TOMATOES 81%

Pernicious

A familiar story of possessed objects and hauntings, which boasts an exotic location and quite a few unpredictable moments. From up and coming director James Cullen Bressack, this film is packed full of the gore he’s become known for in the horror scene with beautifully framed shots capturing it in all it’s bloody detail.
