Games We’re Most Excited For In 2019

By  |

2019 is here, and we have a FULL year of gaming ahead of us.

Man, oh man. Smash Mouth was right when they said, “The years stop coming and they don’t stop coming”.

When we look back at 2018, the gaming industry served us a few solid hits but overall delivered a lackluster year. The lineup of games heading our way in 2019 already has us pumped, with one set to launch in just a few days from the time of posting this.

KINGDOM HEARTS 3 – January 25th, 2019

Kingdom Hearts 3 has been a long time coming. KH3 is the conclusion for the soon to be epic trilogy. The last main story line came out in 2005, and while we have gotten a lot of games to fill the gap during that time, I don’t think anything came close to the excitement we have for the third installment. New big and beautiful worlds to explore, new mechanics, and a new and returning cast of crazy characters. Let’s just hope there aren’t any last minute delays!

WOLFENSTEIN: YOUNGBLOOD – TBD 2019

I remember playing the original Wolfenstein games way back in the day, but I haven’t kept up with the franchise until recently. The New Order and The New Colossus were absolutely outstanding, and it didn’t take long for me to get hooked and beat all 3 games back to back in a period of a few weeks (Although, I probably would have beaten them sooner than that if work and school weren’t serving as obstacles between me and the game at the time). Wolfenstein Youngblood continues the story, but this time you get to play as Blazkowicz’s daughters, and best of all, it’s co-op.!

ANTHEM – February 22nd, 2019

I’ve been on somewhat of a boycott from EA games for a few years now. I think the last game I purchased from them was Dragon Age Inquisition. It’s just their overall greedy stance of games “as a service” or “as a subscription” has really rubbed me the wrong way. The announcement of Anthem has me torn, but leaning towards giving EA one more try.

To be honest, not much is known regarding the story of Anthem outside of a few key things. But I have faith that this game will be a dream come true. Bioware has always been known to create these huge, gorgeous and expansive worlds filled with deep lore, loveable characters and a great story to tie it all neatly together. It seems promising too that EA was willing to delay the launch date by a few months, as it makes me feel that they know they can do better if they have a few more months to iron out the kinks. It’s rare that any game company delays a launch date in today’s day in age, as they can just do a launch day patch that’s 40GB and fix any problems. I find this move completely respectable, and if the game is fantastic I think it could really be the start of turning things around for EA.

RESIDENT EVIL 2 REMAKE – January 25th, 2019

A classic game reborn with new graphics, new mechanics, and even a few tweaks to the story line. What we’ve seen from the demo and previews, the game looks gorgeous and it looks a lot harder than the original. No more cheesing your way through the game with easy shotgun headshot kills, the puzzles throughout the game have been ramped up, and the characters have been given more depth and personality. While I’m not a huge game of horror games because, well, I get scared easily, but I’m definitely considering picking up the remake to see the changes in this cult classic.

SEKIRO: SHADOWS DIE TWICE – March 22nd, 2019

While I’m not the biggest fan of From Software or Dark Souls, only because I have trouble understanding how to “git gud” when it comes to those games. That being said, I won’t be a fool to not want to check out their next gem of a game. A part of me is super excited for this game, and a part of me already foresees countless hours throwing my controller out the window.

THE OUTER WORLDS – TBD 2019

For longer than I can recall, fans have been telling Bethesda to let Obsidian make another game in the Fallout Universe. They may have been too busy to working on the hot mess that was Fallout 76 to actually listen to us all. But, it’s not a huge concern for fans after all because The Outer World is on its way! It looks like Fallout, Borderlands and Mass Effect got together and made an awesome video game baby. It’s the wild west meets an alien dystopian future. So far all we know about the title is that it’s a space colonist on another planet that has to rise up against a soulless corporation, and that’s more than enough to peak my interest!

BATTLETOADS – TBD 2019

Prank callers beware! In the future when you call GameStop asking if they have “Battletoads”, it will be a legit and viable question because it seems like the Beat ’em up 3 player co-op is coming to Xbox One. Not really much is known about the game since it’s announcement back in June, but it is confirmed it will be a Microsoft exclusive.

BLAZING CHROME – March 31st, 2019

A few months back I was thinking to myself, “Man, I haven’t seen a good Contra-like game in quite some time”. Well, it seems like my dreams were answered because I saw the trailer for Blazing Chrome and this is everything I was asking for. A run and gun retro style co-op game. While it does seem to have your run of the mill, “free humanity from evil” story line, let’s be honest, these button mashers don’t need to be deep to have a great time.

TOEJAM & EARL: BACK IN THE GROOVE – TBD 2019

It looks like this game was originally crowdfunded back in 2015, and the fruits of that labor are getting set to release this year. I couldn’t be more excited. I was a huge fan of the original, and a bit disappointed by the direction that they took with the second and third games. From the trailers and gameplay released so far, it looks like the franchise is heading back to its’ roots, just in time for the nostalgia peek in pop culture.

BLOODSTAINED: RITUAL OF THE NIGHT – TBD 2019

Koji Igarashi is known for his work on the Castlevania series and is now back with a spiritual successor to the Castlevania games. The trailers and gameplay so far have the looks and feeling of something gorgeous like Symphony of the Night. And I can’t wait to play it.
