Hey Nerds, Let’s Stop The Pissing Contest!

By  |

“Finally! The End of LAME FORTNITE!”

A frequent phrase taking over the comment section of YouTube videos featuring other Battle Royale style games, like Apex Legends. It really got me thinking about the history of the pissing contest within the gaming community. It’s happened with Marvel vs DC, SF vs MK, League vs DOTA vs HoTS, COD vs BF, and so many other games, comics and content we feel the need to pin against each other.

I get it. It’s human nature to defend our “fandoms” and things we’re passionate about. We have passionate and rabid discussions about them. But sometimes, we are kind of dicks.

Why do we feel the need to bash someone else’s fandom? What do we gain by putting down something someone else enjoys?

Nothing. The answer is NOTHING.

At the end of the day it really is just wasted energy. You walk in, swinging your nerd dick and approach the subject in a way that makes you look like a toddler throwing a fit. And nothing gets accomplished. The only thing you’ll change in this persons mind is their opinion about you.

We’re allowed to dislike things. I didn’t like a lot of the DC movies. Whenever my friends were discussing DC movies they liked, I’d point out a few things I felt in a respectful manner, we had a civil discussion, and then we moved on to talk about things we mutually cared about.

A lot of the times the hate seems to be a bandwagon effort that communities hop on, rather than actual personal opinion. “Oh look, it’s the new kid in town! Better bash the shit out of them since others are doing the same.”

I remember when I first started playing League of Legends, a friend of mine would constantly barrage me with messages and verbal attacks that “DOTA > LOL”. My response? “It’s just the same damn game at the end of the day. Two teams of 5, battling to destroy their opponents base.” He would automatically come back with statements of how “WRONG” I was, but never really make a case for why I was wrong, or when he did he would just reiterate elements that exist in BOTH GAMES. And anytime I discussed League with him nearby, he would immediately force his way into the conversation to bash LoL. Like any of us are going to take him seriously after that major social snafu.

No one likes that person, so don’t be that person.

All in all, there’s a huge difference between having a discussion and bashing on what someone likes. If you don’t like the fandom, explain your reasoning for it in a respectful manner, and give the other parties involved their chance to explain WHY they like it. You can’t just voice your opinion and NOT let others have their turn. That’s super rude (In case you didn’t know).

And have actual points. Saying “I like DOTA better because it pre-dated LoL and it’s what I grew up on,” is completely valid. Don’t just tell someone “That thing you like? It’s stupid and YOU’RE stupid for liking it”.

You’re not proving yourself right by just blindly bashing someone else and their interests. Furthermore, you make yourself look like the biggest tool in the world. It’s childish. And it needs to stop.

So, the next time your panties get in a bunch when someone has a differing opinion from you, maybe think before you speak. Or don’t speak at all if you can’t voice your opinions in a respectful matter. At the end of the day, we all have different tastes. I liked The Last Jedi. Many of you are probably going to flame on me for that, but that doesn’t change my opinion of it.

And always remember one of the many golden rules you may have been taught when you were a kid…

If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.
