Overwatch Releases First New Hero, Ana, Post-Launch!

By  |

The first post-launch hero is on it’s way to the world of Overwatch, with Blizzard’s recent announcement of the new DLC character, Ana Amari.

“Battle-scarred veteran who supports her teammates from a distance using a unique and highly specialized collection of weapons.” – Blizzard commented on the description of Ana.

Ana’s primary weapon is her Biotic Rifle, which fires long-range darts that heal her allies and deals damage to her enemies. She’s also equipped with a Biotic Grenade which has a small AoE (area of effect) range that heals team mates and damages foes caught in range. For a brief period, the grenade also adds a buff that allows allies to receive boosts to all incoming healing and prevents enemies from being healed, which is bad news for opposing Roadhog or Soldier 76 players.

What separates Ana from other heroes in Overwatch is she also comes equipped with a sleep dart that will briefly knock enemies unconscious, allowing her to move in for the kill or flee to safety in tight corners. Ana’s ultimate ‘Nano Boost’ fires a dart to an ally and grants them a brief speed boost, increased damage and improved resistance to incoming attacks. Making Ana complimentary to tank roles such as Reinhardt.

In addition to a gameplay trailer, Blizzard also released her ‘origins’ trailer, giving backstory and shedding some light as to how Ana fits in to the Overwatch universe.

Ana, the mother of Pharah, was depicted to be friends with many other veteran heroes Reaper, Reinhardt, Soldier 76, McCree, Mercy and Torbjörn. It was one unfortunate afternoon where Ana was given the mission to eliminate rival sniper, Widowmaker, and was unable to complete the task. In a brief moment of thought, Widowmaker had gravely wounded Ana and is the direct result of the loss for her left eye. Ana was assumed dead after the accident but made a recover to fight evil from the shadows and emerge as a greater support role for her fallen friends on that fateful day.

We’ll have to wait for the release of Ana and all the colorful dialogue that characters exchange during the game to learn a bit more about her relationships with the rest of the cast.

Blizzard has already announced that they will release Ana and other additional characters for Overwatch for free.
