For many of us, gaming has been a passion long before we even thought about getting our first job. Growing up, I was conditioned to pursue projects and work I was passionate about and was encouraged to learn to hustle to make my own way. While I could never work at a gaming company as far as coding and design go, working for one in the Marketing or Communications team is still a dream of mine. For those of you who are looking to enter the industry, I wanted to help and take the guesswork out of which companies you should be looking for a job with. Here’s a quick list of the top 5 video game companies to work for within the US, and some of the pros and cons of working for them.

1. BLIZZARD ENTERTAINMENT / ACTIVISION

Location: Irvine, CA
Approx. Employees: 4,700 worldwide, 2,622 in Irvine, CA.7
Pros: Great work-life balance. Lots of free swag or heavily discounted merchandise. Large and frequent company-wide events and happy hours.
Cons: Occasional long hours and weekend shifts for almost every department. While salary is great when compared to the industry, it doesn’t help offset the cost of living in the Orange County area.

2. SONY INTERACTIVE ENTERTAINMENT

Location: San Mateo, CA
Approx. Employees: 8,000
Pros: Great company culture. A lot of amazing people to work with. You’ll love the work you do.
Cons: Lack of transparency in decisions from upper management. Work/life balance can be difficult at times.

Location: Rockville, MD
Approx. Employees: 200-500
Pros: Great benefits and fair pay. Great company culture, and killer Holiday parties. Plenty of snacks to soothe that 3 pm crash.
Cons: Can be a sink or swim approach to your onboarding, depending on the department. Little opportunity or support to advance.

Approx. Employees: Less than 50
Pros:  Great culture. Collaborative environment. Small office really helps you get to know your coworkers.
Cons: You will wear more than one hat job responsibility wise.

Approx. Employees: 200
Pros: Great people and culture. Satisfactory work that you will be proud of. A lot of opportunity for growth internally. A lot of trust is placed in employees, which gives you creative freedom over projects to an extent.
Cons: Pay is not competitive enough for the location. Crunch time once a year makes it very difficult to have a proper work/life balance for a few months
